
The Gotthard tunnel is due to close for 900 days for repairs, and unless a referendum to make a second tunnel succeeds (and then Bern agrees to finance it), all the traffic will have to pass over the Alpine Gotthard pass. This can only be reached by crossing the Schöllenen Gorge
on the route to Andermatt, using the Devil's bridge - so called because the first permanent bridge was the result of a pact with the devil, and the place retains a certain atmosphere - as on a snow swept day last October.
